Based on DSpace 1.5.2
Repository Link Dryad

NESCent is a collaborative effort of Duke University, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University and is sponsored by the National Science Foundation. NESCent’s mission is to facilitate broadly synthetic research to address fundamental questions in evolutionary biology. Dryad is a repository of data underlying scientific publications, with an initial focus on evolutionary biology and related fields. The Dryad team is working with stakeholders from journals and scientific societies to develop data sharing policies and ensure the long-term sustainability of the repository. @mire was hired to assist the local development team in designing and implementing customizations to the DSpace repository, Dryad.

Customizations

  • Dataset Embargo
NESCent required @mire to add the capability to embargo datasets in DSpace for a specific amount of time. A Dataset is a DSpace Item and associated Bitstreams. Only the bitstreams (and all the bitstreams) within this item will be protected, while the metadata should remains public at all times. By default, the Curators Group and the DSpace administrators will retrieve permissions to access the embargoed files. The Curators Group is a single group which is defined uniquely in the DSpace repository. The search and browse functionality will still be available on the embargoed item’s metadata and their full-text when indexed. The submitter will be allowed to choose the embargo from a predefined list of available ranges. Configuring embargoes on bitstreams can be accomplished by setting the embargoes per item (for all the bitstreams in the item). Embargoes can be configured during the submission of the dataset by the submitter and/or after archiving in the edit item pages either by the dspace admin or the curators.
  • Dataset Security
NESCent requires the capability in DSpace to secure discovery and viewing of dark copies of bitstreams. Dark bitstreams are bitstreams with an embargo applied to them as stated in "Dataset Embargo". All metadata and links to datasets will still be displayed, but the links to the bitstreams are removed unless the current user has permissions to access the bitstreams. The links to the bitstreams are invisible if the bitstreams are under embargo and the current user has no permissions to access the bitstream.
  • Search System Customizations
NESCent required that the capabilities of the DSpace search system should be extended. Search results should show "Publication Items" as first level, with the related authors/description and then "Dataset Items" listed at a second level within the relevant publication. Advanced Search Form Customization and Index configuration: Publications should be searchable via DOI and advanced search should also contain other fields relevant to Dryad metadata. Publications should be searchable via OpenURL. Full-text indexing has been disabled for all private files. Only public files can be indexed and searched.
  • DSpace upgrade to 1.5.2
The National Evolutionary Synthesis Center wanted to upgrade their DSpace service to DSpace version 1.5.2, retaining all customizations, configuration and content.
