The Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium (ITM) is one of the world's leading institutes for training, research and services delivery in tropical medicine and health care in developing countries.

It started its activities in Brussels in 1906, and has been based in its distinctive buildings in Antwerp since 1931. Today, it works with its partners all over the world towards a common goal of "Health Care for All". The ITM is an inter-university but autonomous post-graduate institute for specialised training, research and services provision. It houses five scientific departments, a travel clinic, a specialised library and various support services, and employs some 340 staff.

Introduction

At the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp, a new institutional repository, based on DSpace is being introduced by the library services. Through the repository, the library wants to offer additional service to the staff members of the institute and promote Open Access.

Customizations

  • making file upload during the submission process optional, instead of mandatory
  • optimisation of the sorting of search and browse result sets
  • enabling alphabetic sorting on author names in certain result sets
  • enabling searches based on date ranges
  • modification of the advanced search pages, using dropdown lists instead of free text fields
  • enabling users to choose their preferred number of results (in search and browse lists)

In the first quarter of 2009, the installation was upgraded to DSpace 1.5.1 JSP UI. Furthermore, a specific OAI-PMH crosswalk was developed to ensure full compliance with DRIVER 2.0 guidelines.

Training

@mire provided technical training to the library staff and guided the process to import legacy data from an old ASCII format.
