Customizations

The project encompassed among others, the following key customizations and services:

  • Rewrite the DSpace import code in order to import historical data and documents, digitized by UNT (University of North Texas) and in order to ingest content in batch after metadata has been manually entered, by library staff through the DSpace submission interface.
  • Implementing custom dark collection(s), for which items in the collection are not viewable, browsable and searchable by regular DSpace users. Dark collections & items and dark bitstreams are only accessible to the repository administrator. It also included a feature to allow users to request access to dark content and community admins to grant permissions to that dark content. Also access based on IP address range(s) per collection was implemented.
  • Customize DSpace to allow image watermarking, configureable on a per collection basis, in order to protect copyrights on images.
  • Repository branding, customizations to Manakin XMLUI to create a custom look and feel, and collection branding for the 5 different institutions in the library consortium
  • A bookmarking and research tools feature, personalized by e-person login.
  • A submission template engine, allowing different sets of metadata that need to be filled out in the submission interface based on digital resource type, selected by the user at the start of the submission.
